There have been a number of clinical trials of the Buteyko Bretahing method which demonstrate its positive benefits.

A respiratory consultant in Australia carried out one of the main Buteyko trials on patients with asthma. The results of this three-month trial found that the group of people using the Buteyko reduced their use of bronchodilator inhalers by 90 per cent.

A similar trial which followed people for six months found a similar reduction in broncholdilator inhaler use as well as a nearly 50 per cent cut in the use of steroid inhalers.

As a life long asthmatic, I have personally experienced the benefits of Buteyko breathing exercises and techniques.

Growing up with asthma in the 1970’s and 80’s I was often sick and missed a lot of school due to Asthma and recurring chest infections. I could not play sport as I would get exercise induced asthma and always had to be careful not to over do it. I felt embarrassed about my condition and missed out on many activities because of it. At about 17 years of age I was prescribed medication which helped to stop my asthma symptoms but resulted in me developing various side affects including a tremor in my hands. I quickly became dependent on the medication and could not go out without it.

After learning Buteyko Breathing techniques my life has improved immeasurably. I now control my condition rather than my condition controlling me. I rarely if ever use medication (once or twice a year). I am now able to do vigorous exercise such as running and cycling, which I could not do before without using an asthma preventer or reliever.

If I feel a wheeze developing I can quickly relieve it by simply breathing correctly and breathing less. It has been an emotional journey for me with many regrets about the life I could have had but for asthma; also it has given me insights to what it is like to live with asthma. I can empathise with my clients, and it is very rewarding to be able to teach people to take back control of their lives.

Is Buteyko for me?

Buteyko (pronounced Bu-tay-ko) is all about improving your health by using the best of complementary and conventional medicine. Buteyko Breathing works in conjunction with your G.P. and clients should not reduce medication without their G.P’s consent

What does it involve?

You will learn breathing exercises and be given advice on how to improve your condition. The breathing exercises are not physically demanding, in fact the most of the programme is carried out sitting comfortably in a chair. Maximum Control with Minimum Medication Many people feel unhappy about the prospect of lifetime dependence on medication for themselves or their children and are looking for a self-help option.

Buteyko provides the following options:

Buteyko breathing therapy provides safe, effective and drug-free help for people with asthma and other breathing related conditions including sinusitis, emphysema, persistent cough and anxiety.

Buteyko is a breathing retraining programme which focuses on normalising your breathing pattern through a series of breathing exercises and techniques.

The techniques of Buteyko were developed in Russia in the 1970s where it is an accepted and known treatment. Buteyko breathing therapy is also well established in Australia and New Zealand and is gradually becoming more recognised and used in the UK it is now available on the N.H.S. there, it has been used in Ireland for over 10 years.

Most people will need to see a Buteyko breathing therapist for five weekly sessions with a follow-up appointment a few weeks later. For those with more chronic or long-term conditions, a longer course of treatment may be required.

Buteyko is suitable for both adults and children. Children often respond very quickly to breathing retraining as their breathing habit is less firmly established.

Buteyko breathing therapy provides rapid and significant improvement for people with asthma and other breathing-related conditions.

Many people with breathing-related conditions overbreathe which aggravates their condition by making their airways hypersensitive, by reducing the amount of oxygen reaching body tissues and distorting their body chemistry.
