| Digestive Problems
The main organs associated with digestion in Chinese medicine are the stomach and spleen. Together they are responsible for the transportation and transformation of food into qi and blood which then nourishes the whole body.
Disharmonies of the stomach and spleen can arise as a result of external conditions such as heat, damp or cold. Digestive disorders can also occur due to other organs such as the liver, gall bladder and kidneys having an adverse affect on the stomach and spleen function. These disharmonies can often be caused by emotional reponses such as worry, fear or anger.
Chinese medicine is very successful at treating digestive conditions such as;
- Indigestion; this is ofetn due to a weakness of the stomach and or spleen and can be treated by nourishing these organs and resolving any adverse interactions from other organ disharmonies.
- Gallstones; Are usually caused by damp heat in the liver and gallbladder. gallstones can be treated by clearing the dampness and heat in the liver and gallbladder.
- Gastric / Duodenal Ulcer; Both these conditions can be caused by a stagnation of qi in the liver and stomach. Treatment would involve moving qi in these organs.
- Ulcerative Colitis; Ulcerative Colitis this is often caused as a result of dampness and heat which can burn the inside leading to blood and mucus in the stools and diahorrea. This is treated by cooling the heat and drying the dampness.
- Irritable Bowel syndrome (IBS); This can be due to an imbalance between the stomach, spleen and intestines the root of which can be due to disharmonies with the liver and kidneys. IBS can be treated by restoring the normal function to the stomach spleen and intestines. If there is a promblem with the liver or kidney this will be rectified in order to prevent the condition re-occuring.
Chinese medicine is very successful in treating digestive problems even in chronic conditions where long term anxiety and stress can lead to any of the above conditions as well as poor appetite, bloating and abdominal pain.
